What we liked: Genuinely low entry. 7 infrared plus 4 weight sensors. 7L waste bin rated at up to 15 days. Compatible with clumping litter generally rather than clay only. Per-cat weight and usage logging.

What we didn’t like: More setup complexity than simpler models. PETKIT states it is not for pets under 6 months. PETKIT also warns against placing it on a carpet or mat, which can interfere with the weight sensors.

Why it made the list: This is the only box on this page we own and have run in our household, across four cats, for over two years. It earns its place on durability we can actually speak to — not on specifications alone, and not because owning it makes it better.

What we can say from ownership: it has kept working, day in and day out, in a four-cat house. That is the claim, and it is the whole claim. We did not record our unit’s model number, so the specifications below — which are for the model we link — are not presented as a description of our box.

What we didn’t like: Smaller waste capacity than the LR4. Less established brand history. Motor noise is noticeable in a quiet room. And the published range stops at 18 lb, the lowest on this page — which rules it out for a big Ragdoll or a Maine Coon.

Correction: we previously listed this as the pick for large cats and Ragdolls. Casa Leo’s own product page states “cats up to 20 lbs (9 kg)”. That is below the Litter-Robot 4, the Neakasa M1 and both 22 lb boxes on this page, so the large-cat positioning was wrong and has been removed.

Why it is still here: a 6-litre waste drawer (per its Amazon listing; Casa Leo’s own page publishes no volume) and a published noise figure of around 30 dB, the quietest here — both of which matter in a small apartment or a bedroom-adjacent placement. UV deodorization is included.

What we didn’t like: Bulky footprint. Premium price. The 20 lb ceiling. And the strictest litter rule in the category: Casa Leo states “use only 100% clay-clumping litter” and that other litters void the warranty — so tofu, corn, pine and paper litters are out.

Why it made the list: Neakasa recommends the M1 Plus for cats from 2.2 lb to around 33 lb, and the open-top layout removes the enclosed-globe acceptance barrier. Cat weight alone does not prove interior comfort, so large-cat buyers should use our dedicated fit comparison.

What we liked: The weight range. Open top removes the most common cat-acceptance barrier. 11.23L waste bin rated at up to 14 days — second only to Casa Leo. ≤50 dB. 2-year limited warranty.

What we didn’t like: Open design means less odor containment above the litter, though the waste compartment is sealed. The tightest litter rule here after Casa Leo’s: particles up to 3 mm diameter and 10 mm length, so a coarse clumping litter may not sift. And Neakasa lists the entry height as 13.86″ while describing it as “easy access” — the listing does not say whether that is the step or the chamber wall, so if your cat is arthritic, treat it as a question to answer before ordering.

Skip an automatic litter box entirely for kittens below the manufacturer’s minimum weight threshold — the Litter-Robot 4 needs 3 lb for automatic mode and drops to semi-automatic below that, and PETKIT states the PuraMax 2 is not for pets under 6 months. If your cat has a known anxiety or noise-sensitivity issue, the genuinely open-topped Neakasa M1 is a safer starting point than an enclosed globe — note that the Meowant we own is not open-topped, despite what this page used to say.
