How ChocoVanillaFurries Rates Cat Products 🐾

We publish the criteria we judge products against, our judgement on each criterion, and — separately — how much direct experience sits behind that judgement. Those are two different things, and most review sites blur them.

Why there is no single number

A “4.8 out of 5” is easy to skim and almost impossible to check. It compresses several unrelated judgements into one figure, hides the weighting, and implies a precision that no cat-product review actually has. Worse, it invites the number to be tuned until it looks right.

What is useful to a buyer is narrower: is this product good at the specific thing I need it for, and how sure are you? So we answer per criterion, in words, with a reason attached. Where a product genuinely warrants a number — because the judgement is documented, the evidence supports it, and the number adds something words don’t — we may use one. Absent that, we don’t.

The criteria

Hardware and consumables fail differently, so they are judged against different criteria. Every product page states which set applies. Each criterion gets a plain rating — Strong, Adequate, Weak, or Not suitable — with a one-line reason you can disagree with.

Hardware

Litter boxes, feeders, fountains, trackers, cameras, vacuums, furniture.

Consumables

Food, treats, litter, supplements, cleaners.

Evidence basis — stated separately, never scored

Alongside the assessment, every product carries a statement of what sits behind it. This is a disclosure, not a grade. It does not raise or lower the assessment, and confirming that we own something does not upgrade its rating — it only changes what we are entitled to say about it.

Where a product is Hands-On Tested or Owned Long-Term, we say what we used and what we observed. Where a detail isn’t available — an exact duration, which cat used it — we leave it out rather than approximate it. Our household is Rum, Stella, Thor and Loki; not every product has been used by all four, and much of our equipment is used across the household generally rather than by one identifiable cat, so we don’t pretend otherwise.

What we own, plainly

Most products on this site are Research-Backed Picks, and we’d rather say so than imply a test bench we don’t have. What we can speak to from our own home:

• Automatic litter boxes — we previously owned a Litter-Robot 3 and later switched to MeowWant, which we have used long-term. We have never owned a Litter-Robot 4 or 5, and nothing we write about those models is first-hand.
• Automatic feeders — we’ve used several dry-kibble feeders over the years; our current one is a FUKUMARU.
• Robot vacuums — more than six over time, across Roomba, Dreame and Ecovacs. Ecovacs is what we reach for most.
• Carpet cleaning — we own and use a BISSELL Little Green ProHeat Portable Deep Cleaner for cat-related spot cleaning, and our own videos of that unit are on the carpet cleaner guide.

Where we haven’t used something, our recommendation rests on manufacturer documentation, published specifications, third-party certification and documented owner-community consensus — and we say which.

Four things we keep visibly separate

1. What we used.
2. What we observed while using it.
3. What the manufacturer’s documentation establishes, cited to the manufacturer.
4. What our research leads us to recommend — our judgement, labelled as judgement.

Blurring those four is the single most common failure in this category. Owning a product is not required to make a useful recommendation; claiming to have owned it when you haven’t is.

What an assessment is not

• It is not an Amazon customer star rating, and we never present Amazon’s rating as our own.
• It is not a manufacturer rating. No brand can pay for, preview, or influence one.
• It is not a claim of testing. The evidence basis tells you exactly how far our direct experience goes.
• It is not a medical or veterinary judgement.
• It is not a requirement imposed on us by Google or anyone else. This is our editorial standard, adopted because it is honest and because it is more useful to you than a decimal.

Prices

Amazon prices move constantly, so we describe tiers — budget, mid-range, premium — rather than quoting a figure that will be wrong next week. Where the real cost depends on consumables or a subscription, that goes in the cost-of-ownership criterion rather than a footnote.

Why some pages have separate US and Canada buttons

Availability differs by country, and the same ASIN can be a different configuration on Amazon.ca than on Amazon.com. We verify each country’s exact product page separately. Where we cannot confirm an exact Canadian match, we say so and leave the button off rather than link to something approximate.
