Litter-Robot 4 Problems: 9 Fixes for Sensors, Odor, WiFi & Cycling (2026)
We do not currently own the Litter-Robot 4, so this guide is based on Whisker documentation, owner reports, support patterns, and our hands-on experience with automatic litter boxes in a multi-cat Ragdoll home. Here are the 9 most common Litter-Robot 4 problems and the exact fix for each.
Last updated: June 1, 2026 • How we review →
Problem 1: Cycle Stuck or Won’t Start (Most Common)
Symptom: Globe partially rotated, stopped. Yellow light flashing. App error.
Cause: Sensor obstruction — stuck clump, dust buildup, or cat re-entered.
Fix: (1) Hold reset 5 sec. (2) Unplug 60 sec, replug. (3) Wipe weight sensor ports with dry microfiber. (4) Check for stuck clumps at globe wall. (5) Verify bezel and globe are seated correctly.
If this recurs, you’re using too much litter or the wrong type. See our guide to litters that work in automatic boxes — the community default is Dr. Elsey’s Ultra unscented.
Problem 2: Globe Won’t Stop Spinning
Cause: Optical sensor on the bezel misaligned or coated with litter dust.
Fix: Power down. Remove globe. Find the small optical sensor inside the bezel (near the back). Wipe with dry microfiber only. Reseat globe carefully until it clicks.
Problem 3: Cat Won’t Use the Box (After It Worked)
Cause: Traumatic cycling event, residual smell from a jam, or new operational noise.
Fix: Pause auto-cycling 1 week. Deep-clean globe, drawer, and base. Replace litter entirely. Re-introduce cycling gradually, running manual cycles when cat is out of the room. If cat still refuses after 2 weeks, see our Litter-Robot alternatives guide — some cats permanently reject enclosed globes.
Problem 4: Bad Smell Despite Frequent Cycling
Cause: Carbon filter saturated, OdorTrap depleted, or waste drawer residue.
Fix: Replace carbon filter every 90 days. Replace OdorTrap monthly. Empty drawer at 75% full. Wipe the rubber gasket around the drawer. Use fitted Whisker bag liners.
Problem 5: Globe Wobbling
Cause: Uneven litter distribution OR globe not seated on bezel correctly.
Fix: Power down. Lift and reseat globe with alignment marks matching. Run empty cycle. Refill litter evenly to the fill line only.
Problem 6: Yellow Light Won’t Stop Flashing
Cause: Drawer sensor dirty, drawer not fully seated, or sensor failure.
Fix: Pull drawer out, wipe with microfiber. Wipe small infrared sensor on rear underside. Push drawer in firmly until it clicks. If still flashing, contact Whisker support.
Problem 7: WiFi Won’t Connect
Cause: 2.4GHz vs 5GHz issue, weak signal, or router firmware.
Fix: LR4 uses 2.4GHz only. Verify your router broadcasts a separate 2.4GHz network. Disable 5GHz temporarily during setup if using a combined SSID. Move router closer or add extender. Reset WiFi: hold reset while pressing cycle button.
Problem 8: Globe Cracked
Fix: Order a replacement globe directly from Whisker (not third-party). Do not continue using a cracked globe — cracks can pinch fur or paws.
Problem 9: Suddenly Loud
Cause: Motor wear, grit on rotation track, or globe seating issue.
Fix: Wipe the rotation track on the bezel with a dry cloth. Reseat globe. Run 3-4 empty cycles. If still loud, motor may be wearing — Whisker offers replacement motors under warranty. Considering the LR5? The LR5’s QuietSift motor is significantly quieter.
When the Problem Is the Litter, Not the Robot
Not every Litter-Robot problem means the machine is broken. A lot of smell, sticking, smearing, tracking, and cycling issues come from the litter itself.
- Weak clumping: Soft clumps break apart during cycling and leave residue inside the globe.
- Too much dust: Dust builds up around sensors and makes the unit seem dirtier than it is.
- Lightweight litter: Some lightweight formulas track more and may not settle cleanly after cycling.
- Overfilling: Filling above the line causes extra mess, poor cycling, and waste drawer issues.
- Heavily scented litter: The enclosed globe concentrates fragrance. Scented litter makes smell worse, not better, in an LR4.
- Pellet or crystal litter: Neither is compatible with the LR4 globe mechanism. Pellets jam; crystal litter is for ScoopFree trays only.
Community default: Dr. Elsey’s Precious Cat Ultra Unscented — dense fine clay, tight clumps, low dust, no fragrance buildup in the globe.

Maintenance Schedule
| Frequency | Task |
|---|---|
| Daily | Verify cycle ran, check drawer level |

| Quarterly | Replace carbon filter, deep-clean globe |
| Annually | Full litter replacement, inspect globe and base for wear |
When to Replace vs Upgrade
- Replace with LR4: If you’re satisfied with the form factor and it’s in budget. See current Amazon price.
- Upgrade to LR5: If noise is an issue — the LR5’s QuietSift motor and AI health tracking are meaningful improvements. See our LR4 vs LR5 comparison.
- Switch to alternative: If the globe design itself is the frustration, our Litter-Robot alternatives guide covers 6 honest picks including the open-top MeowWant.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a Litter-Robot 4 last?
Whisker guarantees 18 months. Real-world owner reports show 4-7+ years with proper maintenance. Sensor failures are the most common end-of-life issue.
Can I fix a Litter-Robot 4 myself?
Most sensor and cleaning issues are user-fixable. Motor and electronic failures usually require Whisker’s repair service or replacement parts.
Does Whisker honor the warranty?
Generally yes per owner reports. Register your unit immediately after purchase. The 18-month warranty covers manufacturing defects.
Is the LR4 worth fixing or should I buy the LR5?
If in warranty, fix through Whisker. If out of warranty with a motor issue, compare repair cost vs upgrade. The LR5 has meaningful improvements but the LR4 is better value for most buyers.
My cat is afraid after a malfunction. Will they use it again?
Most cats re-adapt over 2-3 weeks with patient reintroduction. Some permanently associate the unit with the bad experience. If 3 weeks doesn’t work, switch boxes. See our alternatives guide.
