Litter-Robot 4 vs MeowWant: Which Self-Cleaning Litter Box Should You Buy?

Two of the most-asked-about automatic litter boxes online: the Litter-Robot 4 and the Meowant (you’ll also see it written MeoWant and MeowWant — Amazon uses all three spellings for the same brand). A Meowant has been the working litter box in our four-Ragdoll house for over two years. We have never owned a Litter-Robot 4. This page keeps those two facts separate, and tells you which box fits your cat.

Correction notice — September 2026

An earlier version of this page said the Meowant’s headline advantage was an “always-open” design with no door. That was wrong for the model we linked. The Meowant we had linked (the enclosed low-entry model) has a motorised door flap, stated in the manufacturer’s own listing. Meowant does sell an open-top model — it is a different product with a different ASIN, and it is now identified separately below. We have also removed several performance claims that were not supported by anything we recorded, corrected the multi-cat capacity figures, and added the manufacturer weight and entry-height figures that actually decide this comparison for large cats.

  • 11 September 2026 — Canadian availability of the open-top model. Meowant’s customer service told us in writing: “Sorry we don’t have SC02 in Canada. We only have SC01 in Canada.” We re-checked the same day and the Amazon.ca listing for the open-top SC02 (B0DRP4TQQB) still resolves and can be ordered, so we have left the link in place. The likeliest explanation is a third-party or marketplace seller rather than official Canadian distribution, but we have not confirmed that. Canadian buyers should check the seller and the warranty position before ordering — manufacturer support for a unit outside its official distribution channel is not guaranteed.

The 30-Second Answer

Start with your cat’s weight, not the price. These three boxes have different stated suitability ranges, and for a Ragdoll, Maine Coon or any large cat that is the decision:

  • Litter-Robot 4 — Whisker states it is “suitable for cats that weigh 3-25 lbs, including large breeds like Maine Coons or Norwegian Forest cats.”
  • Meowant 75L open-top — the listing states it accommodates “cats from 3.3 to 22 lbs.”
  • Meowant enclosed low-entry — the listing states it is “basically suitable for all kinds of cats within 3.3-18 pounds.”

If you have a cat approaching or over 22 lb, the Litter-Robot 4 is the only one of the three still inside its manufacturer’s stated range. If your cat is under about 18 lb, all three are inside range and the decision moves to entry height, litter type, and price.

The second thing to check is the step. Whisker lists the Litter-Robot 4 entryway as 15.75″ H × 15.75″ W and sells a ramp separately “to assist cats that need extra help getting in and out.” Both Meowant models publish a low entry as a headline feature — 4.8″ on the enclosed model, a 6.8″ ramp on the open-top. For a kitten, a senior cat, an arthritic cat or a very heavy cat, that difference is more likely to decide whether the box gets used than any app feature.

Our evidence basis on this page — stated plainly

Meowant — Owned Long-Term. A Meowant automatic litter box has been the working box in our household across our four Ragdolls. We published an 18-month review of it on our own channel in December 2025, and it is still the box in use — so that is more than two years of continuous use as of September 2026. Both of our own videos are embedded below so you can see the actual unit rather than take our word for it.

What we cannot tell you about our own unit: we did not record its model number, and Meowant has released several models since. So we are not claiming that the specifications listed below describe the exact unit in our house. Treat our ownership as evidence about how a Meowant box holds up over two years of four-cat use — not as verification of any one model’s spec sheet.

Litter-Robot 4 — Research-Backed Pick. We have never owned a Litter-Robot 4 or a Litter-Robot 5. We did own a Litter-Robot 3 before switching to the Meowant. We are not going to invent a dramatic reason for that switch, because we have not written one down. Everything below about the LR4 comes from Whisker’s published specifications and support documentation, cited where it matters.

What ownership does and does not buy you here: owning something means we can speak to how it has held up. It does not make it the better product, and it does not raise its rating on this site. That rule is written into our review method.

Canada: Meowant told us on 11 September 2026 that the SC02 is not distributed here, only the SC01. This Amazon.ca listing still resolves and can be ordered — check the seller and warranty position first.

The third box: the Meowant enclosed low-entry model. This is the older, cheaper Meowant, and it is the one this page used to point at. It is enclosed, with a motorised door flap — the listing describes “a door flap to auto open and close” to trap odour — and a 4.8″ low entry. Its stated range is 3.3–18 lb, the narrowest of the three. It is a reasonable buy for a small-to-average cat on a budget, and it is not the right pick for a large Ragdoll or Maine Coon. What actually separates them

1. Cat size — the one that decides it for large breeds

This site exists because we have four Ragdolls, and Ragdoll males routinely run 15–20 lb with some going higher. That puts a big male right at the edge of the enclosed Meowant’s stated 18 lb range and inside — but near the top of — the open-top Meowant’s 22 lb range. The Litter-Robot 4’s 25 lb figure has the most headroom, and Whisker explicitly names Maine Coons and Norwegian Forest cats inside that range.

One caveat worth stating: these are suitability ranges published by manufacturers for buying guidance. Whisker does not say whether 25 lb is a structural limit, a sensor calibration ceiling, or a comfort recommendation, and neither does Meowant for its figures. We have not tested any of them at the limit and we are not going to pretend otherwise. What the numbers do reliably tell you is which manufacturer is willing to stand behind its product for your cat’s size.

2. The step, not the enclosure

“Enclosed vs open” gets all the attention in this category. In practice, for older cats and heavy cats, the height they have to clear matters more. Both Meowant models advertise a low entry — 4.8″ and 6.8″ — as a primary feature aimed at “kittens, senior, arthritic and overweight cats.” Whisker’s approach is different: the entryway is large (15.75″ square) and a ramp is available as a separate accessory. Neither approach is wrong; they solve the same problem differently, and one of them costs extra.

3. Litter type — a real, checkable difference

The Litter-Robot 4 is explicit that it will not work with wood pellets, newspaper-based litter, non-clumping litter or loose-clumping litter. If you use a pine pellet or a paper litter, that is a hard stop, not a preference. Both Meowant listings accept a wider set — bentonite, mixed, tofu and plant-based — with the constraint that particles stay under 15 mm so they pass the sifting screen.

If you are not sure what your box will tolerate, our cat litter guide and Litter-Robot litter guide go through what actually clumps well enough to survive a sifting cycle.

4. Multi-cat capacity — what the numbers mean

Whisker’s guidance is that “one Litter-Robot is suitable for up to four cats.” Meowant’s figures are about app recognition, not physical capacity: the open-top listing says the app supports recognition for over 30 cats, and the enclosed model says up to 6. Those are not the same claim, and neither one tells you how many cats one box can physically serve. Both manufacturers also note that cats of similar weight can be confused by the identification system — which, in a house of four same-breed cats, is exactly the failure mode you hit.

The general rule from feline behaviour guidance — one box per cat plus one — is not suspended because a box empties itself. Our own view, from running a four-cat house, is that one automatic box is a scooping-labour saver, not a capacity solution. If you are buying for three or more cats, read our multi-cat guide before you spend on a single premium unit.

5. Price and brand track record

Prices in this category move constantly with promotions, so we do not publish a fixed figure — check the current price at the links above. The stable difference is that the Litter-Robot 4 sits in the premium tier and both Meowant models sit meaningfully below it, and that Whisker has been selling automatic litter boxes for well over a decade while Meowant is a much newer brand. On Amazon.com the enclosed Meowant showed a 4.1 out of 5 average from 2,465 ratings when we checked on 10 September 2026 — that is Amazon’s aggregate of buyer ratings, not our score.

Which should you buy?

Buy the Litter-Robot 4 if:

  • Your cat is over about 20 lb, or you have a large breed and want the most headroom in the manufacturer’s stated range
  • You use standard clumping clay litter and have no intention of switching to pellets or tofu
  • You want a manufacturer with a long track record and an extended warranty option
  • Your cat is confident on a step and untroubled by an enclosed space

Buy the Meowant 75L open-top if:

  • An enclosed box is specifically what worries you — this is the one that is actually open-topped
  • Your cat is under about 22 lb
  • Entry height matters: kitten, senior, arthritic, short-legged or overweight cat
  • You want tofu, plant-based or mixed litter to be an option

Buy the Meowant enclosed low-entry model if:

  • Your cat is comfortably under 18 lb
  • You want the lowest entry of the three (4.8″) and the lowest price
  • You want an odour-sealing door flap rather than an open chamber

Buy none of them if:

  • Your cat has never used a covered or moving box and you have not tried a plain box in the same spot first
  • You are buying it to solve a litter-box avoidance problem — that is a behaviour or health question, and it needs a different diagnosis first
  • You have three or more cats and are hoping one automatic box replaces the rest

What About the Litter-Robot 5?

The Litter-Robot 5 and 5 Pro are Whisker’s newer models. Whisker states they are “suitable for cats that weigh 3-30 lbs, including extra large breeds,” which is 5 lb more headroom than the LR4. The camera and facial-recognition features belong to the 5 Pro specifically, not the base LR5 — a distinction the marketing does not always make clear. We compare all three in detail, including what the weight figures do and do not mean, in Litter-Robot 4 vs 5.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Litter-Robot 4 worth the price difference?

It depends almost entirely on your cat’s size and your litter. If your cat is over 22 lb, it is the only one of these three still inside its manufacturer’s stated range, and that is worth paying for. If your cat is 10 lb and you are happy with clumping clay, the functional gap narrows considerably and the price gap does not.

Which one is safer?

All three publish sensor-based cat detection, and we have no incident data of our own on any of them, so we are not going to rank them on safety. What we can tell you is what each manufacturer claims: 9 sensors with auto-stop on the open-top Meowant, 10 sensors with pause-on-approach and a remote alarm on the enclosed Meowant, and sensor-based detection plus a 3 lb minimum for automatic mode on the Litter-Robot 4. Below 3 lb the LR4 has to run in semi-automatic mode, which matters if you have a kitten. Our broader take is in are automatic litter boxes safe?

Which has better odour control?

All three seal waste into a closed compartment, which is the mechanism that does most of the work. The enclosed Meowant additionally uses a door flap and a fragrance gel. We have not run a controlled comparison and there is no published measurement to cite, so we are not naming a winner. In our experience the bigger odour variable in a four-cat house is the litter and how often the drawer gets emptied, not which of these boxes is doing the sifting.

Can I use any clumping litter in all three?

No — and this is the most common expensive mistake in this category. The Litter-Robot 4 excludes wood pellets, newspaper-based litter, non-clumping and loose-clumping litter outright. Both Meowant models require particles under 15 mm. Check your litter against the box before you buy either.

How long has your Meowant actually lasted?

We published an 18-month review of it in December 2025 and it is still the box in use, so more than two years of continuous four-cat use as of September 2026. Both videos are embedded above. What we cannot give you is a model number for our specific unit, because we did not record it — so treat that as evidence about the brand over time, not about a particular SKU.

Did you switch from a Litter-Robot to the Meowant because it was better?

We owned a Litter-Robot 3 before the Meowant, and we switched. We are not going to build a story out of that, because we did not document why at the time. A switch is not a verdict, and we would rather leave a gap here than invent a reason.

Our Final Verdict

There is no single winner here, and a page that names one is usually selling something. Sort it by cat first:

  • Large cat, over 22 lb, standard clumping litter, step is no problem → Litter-Robot 4. It has the most stated headroom and the longest brand record.
  • Under 22 lb, worried about enclosed boxes, or your cat struggles with a step → Meowant 75L open-top. It is the one that is genuinely open, and the entry is low.
  • Under 18 lb and price-led → the enclosed low-entry Meowant, with the caveat that its stated range is the narrowest of the three.

What our two years with a Meowant tells you is that a mid-tier box in this category can survive daily use by four cats for that long. It does not tell you the Meowant beats the Litter-Robot 4, and we are not going to claim it does on evidence we do not have.
