Ragdoll Cat Care Guide: Everything We Learned With 4 Ragdolls

We’ve lived with Ragdolls for years — Rum, Stella, Loki, and Thor, plus three who’ve passed (Pikachu, Whiskey, Eve). This is everything we actually learned, not what the breed guides tell you.

Ragdoll Basics: What the Breed Guides Don’t Tell You

Ragdolls go limp when held (hence the name). They’re large — males hit 6-9kg. They’re gentle, sociable, and genuinely dog-like in following you around. They’re also one of the most fur-producing breeds on earth, slow to mature (3-4 years to full size), and prone to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). None of that is in the pretty breed brochures.

Grooming

Daily brushing is non-negotiable. Their semi-long coat mats behind the ears, under the arms, and at the collar area if left more than 2-3 days. We brush all 4 cats in a 15-minute assembly-line session each morning. The right brush matters enormously for long-haired cats — see our deshedding brush guide for the specific tools we use on Ragdolls. We also keep nail clippers on the same schedule — our cat grooming kit guide covers the full setup.

Diet and Feeding

Ragdolls are prone to obesity, especially males who are heavily built. We feed wet food as the primary diet with dry food as a small topper. Scheduled meals, not free feeding. Our wet cat food guide covers the high-protein options that work well for large breeds — protein-to-fat ratio matters more than brand reputation. If you’re away during the day, an automatic feeder on a schedule is genuinely the best investment for meal consistency.

Water intake is critical for kidney health. Our Ragdolls almost all prefer moving water over still bowls — see our water fountain guide for the specific models we’ve tested. The PETLIBRO Dockstream 2 is the one we’d recommend without hesitation for large breeds.

Litter Boxes

Ragdolls are large cats and need large boxes. Standard-size boxes are too small — they hang off the edge and choose to go elsewhere. Minimum 50cm length, ideally 60cm+. We use automatic self-cleaning boxes now and wouldn’t go back — our automatic litter box guide covers the full comparison including the MeowWant we’ve used for 18+ months. We’ve also written a specific Litter-Robot 4 vs MeowWant head-to-head for people deciding between the two most popular options.

For litter, Ragdolls track clay litter everywhere on their big paws. A low-dust, low-tracking clay litter helps — our cat litter guide covers the best options, and if you’re using an automatic box, our guide specifically for auto box litter is worth reading.

Health Monitoring

HCM (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy) is the most serious Ragdoll health concern. Reputable breeders test breeding cats, but the condition can still appear. Annual cardiac echos after age 5 are recommended by most Ragdoll-focused vets. Early detection changes outcomes significantly.

Other Ragdoll health priorities: urinary health (feed wet food and ensure good water intake), dental health (enzymatic treats or dental chews), weight monitoring. A smart feeder that logs meal history is useful for noticing when appetite changes.

Mental Stimulation and Play

Ragdolls are social and do poorly with long periods of solitude. If you work full-time, consider a pet camera so you can check in — our cat camera guide covers the options including treat-dispensing models. Interactive play daily is important — wand toys, feather teasers, anything that triggers the chase instinct. See our cat toy guide for specific picks that hold a Ragdoll’s attention.

Ragdolls also enjoy climbing structures — they’re not as agile as active breeds but they use cat trees for napping and high-ground watching. Our cat tree guide covers the heavy-duty options appropriate for large breeds.

Multi-Cat Homes

Ragdolls generally integrate well with other cats due to their docile temperament. They’re rarely the aggressor. We used a slow introduction protocol with each new cat — our cat introduction guide covers the 6-phase approach that worked for us across multiple additions.

Cleaning for a Multi-Ragdoll Home

Four Ragdolls produce a substantial amount of fur. We run a robot vacuum daily — our robot vacuum guide for cat owners specifically covers long-hair breeds since rubber rollers are essential (bristle brushes tangle immediately with Ragdoll fur). For accidents and vomit on carpet, enzymatic cleaners are the only solution that actually removes the scent — see our carpet cleaner guide.

Our Honest Assessment

Ragdolls are extraordinary companions. The size, the temperament, the blue eyes, the way they follow you room to room — nothing compares. They’re also genuinely high-maintenance: daily grooming, health monitoring, large-format litter boxes, wet food diets. Go in with clear eyes about both sides and you’ll find them completely worth it.
