Six Checks Before Any Model-Specific Reset

  1. Confirm the exact model on the base label and read the current light pattern, LCD message or app notification.
  2. Keep the robot on a firm, level surface with no wall, mat, cord or grout line interfering with its feet.
  3. Keep litter at or below the fill line and remove any obstruction from the globe or waste port.
  4. Check the waste drawer and press the liner flat so it does not rise into the sensor path.
  5. Allow the configured cycle delay to finish; verify that Sleep Mode is not suppressing a cycle.
  6. Use the reset or power-cycle sequence for your exact model. Do not copy an LR3, LR4 or LR5 button combination to another generation.

Litter-Robot 3 Troubleshooting

LR3 uses three separate status lights, a weight-sensitive cat sensor and infrared Drawer Full Indicator (DFI) sensors. It does not use the LR4 segmented light bar or LR5 LCD.

  • Cat not detected: LR3 automatic mode requires a cat of at least 5 lb. Put the unit on firm, level flooring and press Reset after emptying the drawer, adding litter, cleaning or moving it.
  • Flashing blue: the drawer-full system is active. Empty the drawer, flatten the liner and clean the LR3 DFI sensor area using Whisker’s LR3 instructions.
  • Slow flashing yellow: the cycle was interrupted by the cat sensor or bonnet removal. Refit the bonnet, clear the interruption and press Reset.
  • Fast flashing yellow: the anti-pinch sensor activated. Stop and inspect the pinch area with the official flow.
  • Flashing red: the cat sensor has been continuously active; remove excess weight or interference and follow the LR3 cat-sensor guide.

Use Whisker’s LR3 support hub to match the exact light sequence.

Litter-Robot 4 Troubleshooting

LR4 combines three Curtain Sensors in the bezel with a weight scale in the base. Its segmented light patterns, Reset behavior, drawer calibration and Wi-Fi steps are model-specific.

Use the dedicated guide for LR4 fixes: Litter-Robot 4 problems and troubleshooting. It covers not cycling, detection, light patterns, drawer readings, Wi-Fi, odor, noise and repair-versus-replace decisions without mixing in LR3 steps.

Litter-Robot 5 and LR5 Pro Troubleshooting

LR5 and LR5 Pro use an LCD screen and model-specific Attention/Error messages. The Cancel button dismisses or clears several conditions; Whisker’s current flows should be followed for the exact on-screen message.

  • Not cycling: check the LCD message, drawer status, Sleep Mode, 3 lb minimum cat weight, litter level, firm placement and sensor cleanliness.
  • Obstruction: remove the bonnet and inspect the globe, base and safety-bar area only as Whisker directs. Do not bypass the safety system.
  • Drawer full: empty the drawer and press Cancel to dismiss the message.
  • Wi-Fi: LR5 uses 2.4 GHz. Current hard-reset and factory-reset controls differ from LR4.
  • LR5 Pro: camera-related faults apply only to the Pro. Plain LR5 does not have the Pro’s dual-camera facial-recognition hardware.

See Whisker’s LR5 and LR5 Pro error-message guide and LR5 not-cycling guide.

Litter-Robot Not Sensing a Cat

ModelDetection systemMinimum automatic-mode weightBest next step
LR3Weight-sensitive cat sensor5 lbLevel floor, correct fill, press Reset after weight changes
LR4Three Curtain Sensors + base weight scale3 lbUse the LR4 detection checklist
LR5 / ProCurrent model sensor system + LCD diagnostics3 lbRead the LCD/app message and follow the LR5 flow

For a cat below the model’s minimum, do not rely on unattended automatic mode. Follow Whisker’s supervised semi-automatic guidance.

Litter-Robot Not Cycling or Globe Stuck

Across models, first check the delay, Sleep Mode, drawer, litter level, floor placement and obstructions. After that, the diagnosis separates by model:

  • LR3: match the three-light sequence; motor over-torque and globe-position faults have distinct patterns.
  • LR4: match the segmented light bar and use the LR4 not-cycling checklist.
  • LR5 / Pro: read the LCD message. An Obstruction or Motor Fault should use the corresponding Whisker procedure.

Do not repeatedly force a cycle if the globe grinds, binds, reverses or reports a motor/safety fault.

Litter-Robot Says “Drawer Full” When It Is Not

  • Every model: empty the drawer, flatten the liner and make sure the bag does not protrude into the sensor path.
  • LR3: clean and troubleshoot the infrared DFI sensors above the waste drawer, then use the LR3 reset flow. See Whisker’s LR3 DFI guide.
  • LR4: clean the bezel sensor area and use LR4 DFI calibration if Reset does not correct the reading. See the LR4 drawer-full steps.
  • LR5 / Pro: empty the drawer and press Cancel; if the LCD error returns, follow the LR5 message-specific flow.

Lights and Error Messages: Do Not Mix Models

LR3 uses three individual lights, LR4 uses a segmented light bar, and LR5/Pro adds an LCD. A flashing yellow LR3 condition is not the same as every yellow LR4 pattern, and LR5 often names the fault on screen.

Litter-Robot Wi-Fi Will Not Connect

  1. Confirm the exact model and update the Whisker app.
  2. Use a private 2.4 GHz network and enter the Wi-Fi name and password exactly.
  3. Enable the phone’s Bluetooth and the permissions requested during onboarding.
  4. Move the phone and robot close to the router for setup; disable a VPN if it blocks local onboarding.
  5. Use the official reset for the model. LR3, LR4 and LR5 controls are not interchangeable.

Wi-Fi is not required for the basic mechanical clean cycle once the robot is set up correctly, but the app provides clearer fault details on connected models.

Cat Refuses the Litter-Robot

  • Keep the old litter box available during transition.
  • Leave the robot powered off at first so it behaves like a normal litter box.
  • Use familiar litter, keep it clean and reward calm investigation.
  • Do not place or force the cat into the globe.
  • After a fault or loud cycle, fix the cause before restarting automatic mode.

Odor, Sticking Clumps and Litter-Related Faults

Empty the drawer, flatten the liner, clean the globe and inspect seals before assuming an electronic fault. Use a clumping litter that passes through the screen; avoid overfilling. Whisker notes that very light or translucent litter can affect some optical level readings.

For siftability and dust considerations, see our Litter-Robot litter guide. If a compatible clay litter is the right fit for your household, the existing US listing for Dr. Elsey’s Ultra is one option—not a required fix for a sensor or motor fault.

Preventive Maintenance

  • Press the model’s Reset/zero control after moving the unit, changing litter weight or emptying the drawer.
  • Keep the feet, sensor areas, waste port and globe path free of litter and hair.
  • Keep the drawer liner flat and replace worn seals or filters as the model’s care guide directs.
  • Never submerge, spray or soak an electronic base or control panel.
  • Use the official guide for disassembly and part replacement.

When Repair or Replacement Is Reasonable

Whisker does not publish a fixed service life. Start with the model-specific diagnosis, check warranty coverage and price the identified part. Every Whisker robot currently includes a 1-year warranty, and 3-year extended coverage is available; external purchases may require activation.

Replacement becomes reasonable when Whisker identifies an uneconomical major failure, the unit has unsafe structural/electrical damage, or the required part is unavailable. A single dirty sensor, liner problem or calibration issue is not a reason to replace the robot.

Only after troubleshooting confirms replacement intent:

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Litter-Robot not sensing my cat?

Check the model’s minimum cat weight, firm placement, litter level and reset requirement. LR3 requires 5 lb for automatic detection; LR4 and LR5 models require 3 lb.

Why does it say drawer full when it is empty?

The liner or sensor area may be affecting the reading. LR3 infrared DFI troubleshooting, LR4 OmniSense calibration and LR5 LCD/Cancel steps are different.

Why will my Litter-Robot not cycle?

Common causes are the cycle delay, Sleep Mode, a full drawer, excess litter, incorrect placement, a dirty sensor or an obstruction. Match the exact model and status before resetting.

How long should a Litter-Robot last?

Whisker does not publish a fixed lifespan. Use the diagnosed part, warranty and repair cost—not age alone—to decide whether to repair or replace.

Can I use a Litter-Robot without Wi-Fi?

Basic mechanical cycling does not depend on a live Wi-Fi connection, but connected models use the app for onboarding, settings, history and clearer fault details.
